Cure gig in Prague - February 2008

Went there without high expectations. Actually I never listened them much. Acknowledged them of course as a great late 80's and 90's band, knowing well all the hits like "Lullaby", "Friday I'm in Love", "High", etc. Having at home only "Wish" album fro  early 90's and excellent eponymous CD "The Cure" from 2004.  So days go by and finally it is 21. February and we rush forth to T-mobile Arena. I coulour my eyes black, using my wife's eye pencil, in the tram catching sights od the people - thinking "who are those freaks"? The arena is full, we push ourselves as close to the podium as possible.

The support: "65daysofstatic" is not bad, but it is only support. Fusion of psychadelic sound with noise. A lot of the songs sounds similar... After 45 minuts they are  over, we still trying to get closer to podium - at the end "we score" in 4th row. Starting to be nervous and thinking how good it will be today! And finally show starts.... The intro of "Plainsong" and 4 guys appears on the scene. Suprise - no keyboards, just two guitars, bass and drums. And 3-hour long gig is opened. Immediatelly loosing doubts that these 50 year old guys are "gone". No way. Sharp guitars, perfect rhytmic section and surprisingly great Robert's singing. Impossible to name the top moments of the concert: "From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea", "Lullaby", "Lovesong", "Pictures of You", "In Between Days", "Just Like Heaven", "Us or Them",.... This will never end. Audience jumps and sings at full cry. I am so yelling, that being afraid to lose my voice. Loosing feeling about the time, looking at the watches and 2,5 hours is gone! Crazy! Luckilly the band add 2 series and it appears the show is over. But suddenly Simon Gallup appears again on scene, followed by the rest of the band. The gig is closed by final series of early songs with peak of "Boys Don't Cry". Everybody around me yells and screams! The end....

Now, get out of the sweat and crowded arena, catch the taxi and get home. All my body, especially legs and back pains. I am terribly tired, empty, but happy and partly sad. Don't want, even cannot  talk, just able think about past 3 hours, wishing it never ends.... Great, absolutelly fabulous performance with no weak moments. This band is not dead yet guys, looking forward for their new release which is supposed to be out soon.

Surely the best gig I have seen in last 10 years, maybe the best one ever. Thank you Robert and the band. Hopefully see you again soon in Prague!
